Temporary Visa: VITEM-I Print E-mail

Eligibility:
  • Scientists, professors, researchers, participants in cultural, technological or scientific missions. (services provided must not be paid for by a corporation or other legal entity based in Brazil, except for wages for services rendered, with the submission of a receipt);
  •  Scientists, technicians, researchers, or volunteers under the umbrella of an international cooperation program;
  • Interns and other unpaid trainees, bearers of scholarships, receiving professional practice in Brazil;
  • Exchange students;
  • Technicians receiving training in the operation and maintenance of machinery or equipment produced in Brazil;
  • Amateur athletes, under 21 years-old, participating in training programs in Brazil.
  • Provision of services to a religious or social assistance entity, without employment relationship with a corporation or other legal entity based in Brazil (see requirements)
Temporary Visa I holders are not allowed to engage in any paid activity in Brazil.
Procedures:
Submission to the Consulate General:
 
Two visa application formper applicant, properly and completely filled in. Note: all visa applications must be filled out onlineEach visa application form must be duly signed by the applicant (and parents must sign the application forms for those under 18 years of age and also must complete the Authorization Visa Form for Minors), and must be submitted together with the following documentation:
  • Passport with at least six months of validity remaining and with at least one blank page available for the visa stamp;
    for non-Americans returning to the United States, copy of green card or valid re-entry visa allowing for re-entry into the United States;
    for non-Americans without a green card or valid re-entry visa into the United States, a valid visa to country of final destination after the trip to Brazil (this requirement does not apply to applicants returning to their country of citizenship);

  • one recent 2" x 2" passport-type photos, either in color or black and white, front view, full face, with a light background (snapshots are not accepted);

  • Proof of residence within the consular jurisdiction (check below) for the past 12 months;

  • Proof of financial ability to pay for the one's stay in Brazil;

  • Good conduct record issued by the local (i.e., applicant's place of residence) police department/authority;

  • Visa fee payment of US$ 60.00 per visa. An additional non-refundable processing fee of US$ 130.00 per visa will be charged to US citizens in reciprocity for the identical fee paid by Brazilian citizens who apply for a visa to the United States of America



 

  • a non-refundable handling fee of US$20.00 per visa applies to visa applications submitted by mail or by any individual other than the applicant or an immediate member of his or her family.

  • In case of professorial, research, or scientific activities: letter from Brazilian sponsoring organization informing activities to be pursued, length of stay and pecuniary conditions. Medical or dental volunteer services can only be provided once the proper authorization by a Conselho Federal or Regional de Medicina is issued. The collection of biological and mineral material and/or carrying out activities in indigenous areas require prior authorization by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq and/or by the Fundação Nacional do Índio - FUNAI.

  • In case of activities under an international cooperation program: copy of the international agreement, proof of professional expertise, and letter from sponsoring organization informing activities to be pursued by applicant and attesting to the following: that the organization will be responsible for repatriating the applicant (and his/her family, as applicable) once the visa expires or the agreement ceases to exist, and that the applicant will not receive any payment from a Brazilian party;

  • In case of interns: copy of appropriate documentation attesting to the conditions for internship, scholarship, and the required involvement of a Brazilian government agency, international cooperation organization, or authorized exchange organization (in this case, add copy of its bylaws, official registration, and Cadastro Nacional de Pessoas Jurídicas);

  • In case of exchange students: copy of the school registration or confirmation of acceptance, parents' authorization (if applicant is under 18 years old), address/names/qualifications of responsible parties in Brazil;

  • In case of technical training: letter from employer attesting to the fact that applicant will not receive salary or payment of any kind by a Brazilian party, and letter from Brazilian corporation informing the nature of the training to be provided and attesting to the fact that it will be hold responsible for the applicant while in Brazil. This visa is good for 60 days and may be extended only once for the same period of time;

  • In case of athletic training: parents' authorization (if applicant is under 18 years old), recent non-criminal record issued by Police Department (if applicant is of a criminally liable age), copy of birth certificate, copy of the agreement/contract between the American and the Brazilian organizations, and copy of document(s) attesting to the following: confirmation of training for applicant for a specified period, maintenance conditions, and guarantee of repatriation of applicant once the visa expires;

  • Copy of marriage certificate, birth certificate, or other official dependency document (if applying for an extended-stay visa to immediate family members);

  • as applicable, yellow fever vaccination certificate is required only if the applicant has traveled within the last 90 days to any of the following countries: Angola, Benin, Bissau Guinea, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Camerun, Central African Republic, Colombia, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, French Guiana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guiana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenia, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Peru, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Surinam, Tanzania, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda or Venezuela. Yellow fever vaccination is advisable if applicant's destination in Brazil includes any of the following States: Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Federal District, Goiás, Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and/or Tocantins;
  • a person under 18 year of age not traveling with both parents or legal guardian(s) must provide a notarized letter of consent signed by the non-accompanying parent or guardian, together with appropriate payment to facilitate formal authentication by the Consulate General of the notarized letter of consent and, as applicable, the guardianship document (proof of guardianship is required)
Note: Mail Applications - Applications may be submitted by mail only by residents of the District of Columbia, Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia (see at visas' main page instructions for mail applications).

THE CONSULATE GENERAL WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR PASSPORTS SENT BY MAIL.

The requirements listed above should not, in any way, be considered all-inclusive. The Brazilian Consular Office processing the visa reserves the right to apply additional requirements when they are deemed necessary.
First entry into Brazil must take place within 90 days from the date the visa was issued.
This visa is good for multiple entries for the time of the visa's duration.
Visas will be issued on a "laissez-passer" to nationals of the following countries: Bhutan, Central African Republic, Comoros, Kampuchea,Taiwan.
Brazilian nationals must enter and leave Brazil with their Brazilian passport only. Those who have lost their Brazilian nationality must submit proof that the Brazilian Decree of renunciation of their Brazilian citizenship was published in the " Diário Oficial".
 
Jurisdiction: District of Columbia, States of Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and North American bases, excepting Guam.
